Committees

With over 4,900 members, SDPA provides dynamic leadership for DermPA™s across the nation. SDPA Committee volunteers play an invaluable role and the contributions they make impact the day-to-day work of SDPA, as well as shape the future of the DermPA™ profession.

Please see our standing committees below, each of which work to provide valuable programs and benefits for the SDPA and its members. Committees each have one or more Chairs, at least one Vice Chair, at least 2 Fellow members, a Board Liaison, and a Staff Liaison. Committees are overseen by the Board of Directors. We encourage interested SDPA Members to join committees of interest.

CME Conference Committee

This committee is responsible for providing oversight, leadership, coordination, and direction to each of the SDPA Annual Conferences (2) by managing the following: Designating a medical director; selecting topics and speakers; inviting speakers; titling lectures and reviewing objectives; grading abstracts; attending conferences and moderating sessions; and sending speaker thank you notes.
 

CO-CHAIR - Lauren Howe, MPAS, PA-C, Valparaiso, IN

Lauren earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Midwestern University and completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Valparaiso University. She has been practicing in Dermatology for 9 years. Lauren enjoys volunteering and giving back to the PA community. She also enjoys advocating for PAs.

She currently serves on the board of directors for TXSDPA. Additionally, Lauren volunteers for the NCCPA and helps develop test questions for the Dermatology CAQ. She also volunteers with the SDPA CME Committee, and has been a committee member since 2017 before becoming a vice chair in 2023. She helps to develop engaging lecture topics and pursue speakers who effectively present these topics to conference attendees.

Lauren is excited to continue to volunteer for the SDPA, and bring novel and engaging speakers and content to the members of the SDPA.

Lauren enjoys spending time with her family and two dogs and cat. She also enjoys playing volleyball, traveling, and growing various fruits.
 

CO-CHAIR - Victoria Maloney, MPAS, PA-C, Brookfield, WI

Victoria graduated with her Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Marquette University then went on to complete an Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program in Dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She continues to work in Dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee with a focus in inflammatory skin diseases including psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa specialty clinics. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she works as an Epic Informaticist working within the Dermatology Department to optimize practice. Victoria has volunteered on the SDPA Membership Committee since 2019 earning the award of Committee Member of the Year in 2021, was Chair of Membership Committee from 2022-2024, and is looking forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the SDPA and its members.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee collaborates closely with staff and leadership to advance and communicate SDPA’s mission across diverse audiences including members, consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The committee members serve as subject matter experts on the profession with an eye towards enhancing communications strategies and developing innovative ideas that elevate the profile of the Society and DermPAs™. Committee members are tasked with offering input on integrating various marketing and communications tools and formats to enhance their efforts.
 

CO-CHAIR – Rob Casquejo, PA-C, Scottsdale, AZ

Rob Casquejo completed his PA studies at Western Michigan University and worked in trauma surgery and emergency medicine for 3 years, prior to beginning practice in dermatology. He was trained in medical, surgical and cosmetic practice, which included training in Mohs surgery, along with management of patients in a psoriasis treatment center. He continues to work in Dermatology at the Skin and Cancer Center of Scottsdale, where he is the CEO and a partner in the practice. He has been an SDPA member since 2003, and has served as a clinical instructor, advisor, and committee member in the organization. He joined Dermcast TV in 2018 and continues to serve as a correspondent. He was appointed as co-chair to the Communications committee in 2023 and continues to have a passion in promoting the PA profession through media, supporting entrepreneurship for PAs, and a passion for medical missionary work.
 

CO-CHAIR – Hope Cook, PA-C, Athens, GA

Hope Cook is a dermatology Physician Assistant based in Athens, GA, where she lives with her husband and two teenagers. A graduate of Emory University's PA program in 2002, Hope started her career in internal medicine before finding her passion in dermatology. She credits two episodes of career burnout with waking her up to her life's calling of helping other providers heal from burnout. Now a certified life coach, speaker, and host of the podcast "Physician Assistant Burnout," Hope is dedicated to supporting her colleagues through all stages of their careers. She still works part-time in medical dermatology and in her free time works on her book about healthcare burnout. She's been a co-host of SDPA's DermCast since 2021 and also serves as co-chair for SDPA's communications committee.

Diplomate Fellowship Advisory Panel

The committee shall be responsible for the oversight of the Diplomate Fellowship™, diplomates, diplomate status, to include development and marketing.
 

CO-CHAIR | Kristen Grippe, PA-C, Waterford, PA

Kristen worked exclusively as a dermatology PA from 2005-2015 in Erie, PA. In 2015, she transitioned to working as a full time faculty member in the Gannon University PA program in Erie but still works 1 day per week in the clinic.  Kristen served as the chair of the Distance CME Committee for a number of years and was instrumental in leading the development of the Diplomate Fellowship program. She currently serves as the Chair of the Diplomate Fellowship program committee. Kristen has this to say when asked why she decided to join SDPA leadership: “I feel that it is very inspiring to work with an organization made up of people just like yourself....Dermatology PAs! We can all relate to one another and our unique specialty, but more importantly we can all make a difference in the SDPA by using our inspiration and motivation to support one another and the advancement of all PAs working in dermatology."
 

CO-CHAIR | Valerie Stern, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C, Los Angeles, CA

Valerie is a board certified, SDPA Dermatology Diplomate Fellow practicing integrative dermatology in Los Angeles, CA. Valerie has specialized in dermatology for over 25 years and practices general, surgical, cosmetic and laser dermatology from an integrative standpoint, using both allopathic and alternative therapies in the care of her patients.

Valerie received her degree in Physician Assistant Medicine from Keck, USC School of Medicine, she then obtained her masters degree in dermatology from the University of Nebraska Medical School followed by doctorate degrees in medical science with an emphasis on clinical medicine, dermatology and in physician assistant education from Lynchburg University in Virginia.

Valerie lectures and teaches in didactic and clinical skills at USC Keck School of Medicine, Department of Physician Assistant Studies, as well as acting as an expert in legal case testimonial during malpractice litigation involving dermatology advanced practice providers. Valerie has been an international laser trainer, educator and lecturer for two large laser companies over the past 15 years. Valerie is the director of the DCIE (Dermatology Clinical and Integrative Essentials) educational program at LearnSkin, an online integrative dermatology educational platform, and is passionate about providing the highest quality care to each and every patient she sees. She believes that internal optimization is key to overall health which manifests outwardly onto the skin. Understanding root cause etiology plays a significant role in keeping the skin at its best. Valerie also volunteers with the SDPA, Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, and at present co-chairs the SDPA Diplomate Fellowship Program Advisory Panel.

In her free time, Valerie loves to study, learning all she can about environmental interactions and genetic predisposition, focusing on such factors as toxins in our homes, the foods we consume, and the products we put on our skin daily, all of which impact our overall health and well being of ourselves and the planet.

Distance Education Committee

This committee serves as the ‘point of contact’ for all SDPA educational programs that do not occur during in-person meetings and conferences. The committee develops, organizes and facilitates quality online educational offerings.

Allyssa completed her Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree at Concordia University Wisconsin in 2016. Allyssa has practiced as a PA in Dermatology since starting her career and continues to practice as a DermPA in Gurnee and Libertyville, Illinois. Allyssa currently resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Allyssa’s involvement with SDPA started very early on when she joined as a Student Member and continued membership as a practicing Physician Assistant as well as an SDPA Diplomate. Allyssa joined the Distance Education Committee in 2022 and is excited to continue to serve on the committee in the Co-Chair role.

CO-CHAIR | Michael Rubio, PA-C, Brooklyn, NY

Michael Rubio, PA-C, is a leader in dermatology education and digital health innovation. A graduate of Emory University with a Master’s in Physician Associate Studies, he is primary care trained and has specialized in dermatology for the past 7 years. As Vice Chair of the SDPA Communication Committee, Michael updated their social media strategy and produced SDPA’s LitBit, transforming dense peer-reviewed journals into engaging short-form videos to expand dermatology education globally.

At Infinity Dermatology in Brooklyn, NY, Michael started New York’s first text-based dermatology consultation service, significantly increasing access to care. He then co-founded Well Revolution, a digital health platform addressing the primary care shortage in the U.S. This platform improves access and affordability for patients while creating work-life flexibility and economic opportunities for PAs.

Michael is also a contributing medical writer for Dermatology Times and contributes to the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants’ development of the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Dermatology. He is a strong advocate for the PA profession, advising on the New York State Society of PAs and proudly supporting the AAPA.

Early Career DermPA™ Committee

The Early Career DermPA™ Committee reviews and advises on opportunities within SDPA to enhance the organization’s engagement with and support of DermPAs™ who are within the first five years of their career in the specialty. The committee explores opportunities to grow and retain early career SDPA members and enhance the professional development and learning programs available to them. The committee also considers opportunities for engagement of early career DermPAs™ at SDPA conferences. Members of this committee are themselves DermPAs™ within their first five years in the profession.

After serving four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, Joe graduated from Winona State University in Minnesota and initially pursued a career in corporate America. Realizing his true calling was in medicine, he earned his Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University in 2014.

Since then, Joe has built a career in dermatology in Colorado. He has volunteered and served as Vice Chair for the SDPA Membership Committee and contributed as a guest lecturer and adjunct professor at Rocky Vista University Physician Assistant Program.

Dedicated to providing the best possible patient care, Joe focuses on educating and involving his patients in their treatment plans to meet their individual needs.

House of Delegates (HOD) Committee

This committee is responsible for informing the SDPA Board of items coming before the AAPA House of Delegates (HOD). The committee reads all items coming before the House and shares constituent views and suggestions, particularly those related to implementation of AAPA policy positions, with the SDPA Board. The committee’s role attending the House of Delegates is to advocate on behalf of the SDPA and carry the SDPA vote for each issue in which SDPA has an interest. Upon return from HOD, the committee files their final report to the Board.

Kirsten Kuhn is a Dermatology PA in Aspen and Glenwood Springs, Colorado where she practices medical and cosmetic dermatology. Kirsten earned her Master's degree from the OHSU School of Medicine in Portland, Oregon and also holds a Master's in Public Affairs from Princeton University. She is a Diplomate Fellow of the SDPA and vice chair of the Governmental Affairs & Advocacy Committee. Kirsten is interested in health policy and increasing access to high-quality care for everyone, and is excited to share her passion for dermatology and health policy as the HOD Junior Delegate for the SDPA.

Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee

The Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee monitors and advises the Society on public policy developments impacting SDPA members, dermatology professionals, patients, and the skin health of the general public. The committee develops an annual federal/national advocacy agenda, identifying key areas of advocacy focus and advising on the position of SDPA on important issues. The committee also monitors important policy developments at the state level. The committee leads grassroots efforts for SDPA members to advocate for the future of the DermPA™ profession.

CHAIR – Deborah Horwitz, PA-C, Washington, DC

Deborah became the committee's new Chair in July 2023 after serving as Vice Chair and participating on SDPA's PA Week Ad Hoc Committee. She has been a practicing dermatology PA since 2014, but has also worked in other specialties including family medicine, urgent care and clinical trials research. She graduated from Baylor College of Medicine’s Physician Assistant program in 2010, where she received a master’s degree.

Prior to becoming a PA, Deborah worked in health care public relations and was involved directly in politics on Capitol Hill. She maintains an interest in health care systems and policies today. She received a bachelor’s degree in political communications from American University in Washington DC in 2005 and graduated from PA school at the Baylor College of Medicine in 2010.

Deborah specializes in general adult and pediatric dermatology. She was an Assistant Professor at UTHSC PA what program from 2019-2023 teaching Dermatology, Pediatrics and a special topics in medicine course.

Deborah graduated from American University in Washington DC with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Communication. This degree was followed by completing Baylor College of Medicine’s Physician Assistant program, where she received a Masters degree.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee evaluates and advises on the needs of SDPA members using surveys, data, and their own perspective as SDPA members and dermatology professionals. The committee shepherds the development of member programs and benefits and ensures the ongoing growth of the SDPA membership. The Membership Committee oversees the Annual SDPA Awards process including selection of the winners. The committee also promotes the volunteer program to ensure a pathway for future SDPA leaders.

CHAIR – Desiree Morrison, PA-C, Rochester, MN

Desiree Morrison is a board certified and licensed Physician Assistant. She graduated with her Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree from the University of Findlay in Ohio. Desiree has been a Physician Assistant in medical dermatology for the past 5.5 years. She currently resides in Rochester, Minnesota.

Desiree has been volunteering with SDPA's Membership Committee since July 2020. She served two years as a member on the committee before becoming Vice Chair for two years, and now serves as Chair. Desiree is a SDPA Diplomate Fellow and earned SDPA Committee Member of the Year in 2023. She is passionate about dermatology and the PA profession. Desiree looks forward to continuing to be involved with SDPA and serve its members.

In her spare time, Desiree enjoys spending time with her family and two dogs, as well as kayaking, golfing, and reading.

Nominating Committee

This committee is responsible for recruiting and vetting candidates interested in standing for SDPA elected office. The committee evaluates all candidates according to the qualification criteria set forth in the SDPA Bylaws and according to such other selection guidelines as may be established by the Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee distributes a ballot to the voting membership on a date to be determined by the SDPA Board of Directors.

CHAIR – Laura Bush, DMSc, PA-C, DFAPPA

Laura is a seasoned PA with over 30 years of dedicated service in the medical field. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Central Florida, earned a Master of Medical Science from Emory University, and obtained her Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Lynchburg.

Laura has worked in multiple medical fields, including emergency medicine and family practice, but has spent the last 20 years as a DermPA. Over the past decade, she has held key leadership positions, including Secretary-Treasurer for DPAF, Director at large, Secretary/Treasurer, President, and now immediate Past President of the SDPA. She was recently awarded the 2024 SDPA Board Member of the Year and board service award.

Laura's service to DermPAs™ began with the Georgia Dermatology PAs (GDPA), a growing state society, where she served as Treasurer for six years. In 2018, the GDPA recognized Laura’s service and dedication by naming her the Inaugural Physician Assistant Leader of the Year. Her significant professional contributions include precepting students and guest lecturing for Morehouse Medical, South University, and Emory University PA school. Additionally, she has published several articles in the JDPA journal, furthering the knowledge and understanding of the DermPA profession.

As Immediate Past President, Laura hopes to continue serving the DermPA™ profession by supporting and guiding the many excellent initiatives planned for the SDPA. She hopes to contribute ideas, serve as a resource and mentor for all the outstanding SDPA leaders and members, and advocate for the DermPA profession.

DEI Task Force

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force pursues goals to broaden diversity within the SDPA and drive meaningful change, foster a more inclusive dermatology community, and promote equitable healthcare practices for all.
 

CHAIR –Travis Hayden, MPAS, PA-C

Travis is a proud certified PA working in medical education and dermatology in beautiful upstate New York. He completed his undergraduate studies at Le Moyne College and upon graduating was awarded enrollment into the U.S. Navy’s Health Services Collegiate Program. Through the program he received formal training as a PA, working as a PA in military and family medicine. Since completing his tour in the Navy in 2003, he has enjoyed working in the specialty field of dermatology providing care to patients in a variety of clinical settings.

Travis is a full time faculty member of the Le Moyne College Department of Physician Assistant Studies and enjoys guest lecturing as a clinical instructor for the SUNY Upstate Medical University PA Program and the Le Moyne College Family Nurse Practitioner Program, as well as other PA graduate and fellowship training programs nationally.

Travis has a long history of service with SDPA. In 2007, he created and established the Journal of Dermatology for Physician Assistants (JDPA), the official journal of the SDPA, where he served as the Editor-in-Chief from 2007-2020, and has continued to work as the Founding Editor for the publication. He has also served on the SDPA Board of Directors, the DPAF Board of Trustees, and in numerous other volunteer roles.

Journal of Dermatology for PAs (JDPA) Editorial Board

The Journal of Dermatology for Physician Assistants (JDPA) is a peer-reviewed publication that delivers innovative clinical, surgical, cosmetic, and professional content exclusively for dermatology PAs. Submissions to the JDPA are peer-reviewed by a panel of experienced dermatology PAs, educational PAs, and dermatologists before being accepted for publication. Manuscripts submitted for publication are reviewed with the understanding that they are original and have neither been submitted elsewhere nor are being considered by other journals.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF - Cynthia F. Griffith, MPAS, PA-C, Arlington, TX

Cynthia Griffith has been a Dermatology Physician Assistant at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas for 13 years. Cynthia is the co-creator of a High Risk Skin Cancer Transplant clinic for patients who are immunosuppressed after solid organ or bone marrow transplant. Cynthia is the Editor in chief for the Journal of Dermatology Physician Assistants and is a guest lecturer in the UT Southwestern PA program and a lecturer at local, regional and national conferences. She also does grant funded research studying the dermatology PA workforce. When not practicing, Cynthia is a national champion sailor and marathoner.

Dermatology PA Foundation (DPAF) Board of Trustees

The Dermatology PA Foundation (DPAF) was established in 2015 in order to help Dermatology PAs expand their leadership and contribution to the field of Dermatology. The DPAF is led by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA) Board of Directors.

CHAIR – Faseeha Raza, MMS, PA-C, Parker, TX

Faseeha is joining the Dermatology PA Foundation as the organization's Chair, driven by her passion for serving the community through education and service. Her vision is to elevate DPAF’s visibility on both national and global levels by fostering philanthropic interest and opportunities for Derm PAs. She is a board-certified PA specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology and primary care medicine. Faseeha earned a Master of Medical Science in PA studies from Baldwin Wallace University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is committed to her work with non-profit organizations and continually seeks to contribute to PA education, research, and professional development initiatives. Faseeha enjoys teaching and serves as a clinical mentor for the West Coast University Physician Assistant program in Dallas, Texas.

Faseeha is the founder and CEO of Chic Derm & Aesthetics and the Lung & Sleep Health Center, a multidisciplinary medical practice in Plano, Texas. Alongside her executive roles, she has successfully served as the Chair of SDPA’s Distance CME Committee from 2022 to 2024 and as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Dermatology PA Foundation from 2023 to 2024. Previously, she was a member of the Board of Trustees for DPAF, the Vice Chair for the SDPA Distance CME Committee, and the Director of Community Health Education at CISC Free Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

State Affiliate Presidents Network

A peer-to-peer network of Affiliate Board Presidents. Quarterly calls are offered with the Presidential SDPA line to maintain communication and feedback.

STATE AFFILIATE LIAISON – Margaret McKernan, DMSc, PA-C, Avon Lake, OH

Maggie is a board certified Physician Assistant working full time in medical and surgical dermatology. She received her Master of Physician Assistant Science degree from Gannon University and her Doctor of Medical Science degree from Shenandoah University. She is a Society of Dermatology Diplomate Fellow and Dermatology Achieve Program alumnus. She is also president of the Ohio Society of Dermatology PAs (OSDPA). Her passion for education and promoting the PA profession make her eager to support current and prospective states affiliate organizations in their growth and development. Further, she is committed to fostering their SDPA connection to make each state organization stronger.

In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball, spending time with family, and exploring Cleveland with her husband.
